Cyclades
The Cyclades are useful as a geography, but less useful as a single travel brief. The important decision is which island should define the trip, and whether adding another creates enough contrast to justify the movement. Calanova starts with that choice, then narrows the stay and the pace around it.
Choose the island before designing the trip
Santorini, Mykonos, Milos, Paros, Naxos, Sifnos, and Tinos should not be treated as interchangeable versions of the same holiday. We would decide first what the trip is meant to prioritize, then choose the island that supports it. Accommodation, itinerary, and any second stop should follow from that decision rather than determine it.
The Cyclades make more sense once the islands stop being interchangeable
The Cyclades are easy to plan as a collection of names. The more useful approach is to treat each island as a different proposition and decide what the trip should accomplish before deciding where it should go.
Santorini or Mykonos may be the obvious starting point, but familiarity should not become the selection criterion. Milos, Paros, Naxos, Sifnos, and Tinos give the same regional map very different possibilities. The important distinction is not which island is "best," but which one supports the pace, privacy, accommodation, and degree of movement expected from this particular trip.
We would make that choice before building an island-hopping itinerary. Adding another destination should change the trip enough to justify breaking its continuity. If the second island merely adds another hotel, another transfer, and another version of days already being enjoyed, staying longer in the first can be the more considered decision.
The accommodation brief should follow the same logic. On some trips, the property is expected to carry a significant part of the experience; on others, position and ease of movement matter more. Spending more is persuasive when it improves the version of the Cyclades already chosen, not when it simply raises the category of hotel.
For Calanova, the region is therefore less about assembling the strongest-known islands than editing them against one another. Choose one with conviction. Add another when the contrast earns the interruption. Leave the rest available for a different trip.
