Calanova

About Us

There is a kind of traveler who reads forty reviews and trusts none of them. Who knows that “stunning” means nothing, that a five-star rating averages the opinions of people who wanted different things, and that the difference between a good hotel and the right one rarely survives a listicle.

Calanova is written for that traveler.

We publish rankings that make choices. Five Maldives villas, not thirty. The Lake Como hotels that justify their rate and, named plainly, the famous ones that don’t. When we leave something out, we often tell you why, because the exclusions are where the judgment lives. Anyone can compile. Curation is the harder, rarer thing, and it is the only thing we sell.

We hold some unfashionable positions. That a trip planned a year out is better than one booked in a fever. That restraint reads as luxury and enthusiasm reads as advertising. That the best room in a lesser hotel usually beats the lesser room in a famous one. That you, reading this, do not need to be persuaded to love travel, you need someone to have done the narrowing before you arrived.

So that is what we do. We narrow. Slowly, in long form, with our reasoning shown and our update dates visible. When a ranking changes, we say what changed our mind.

You will not find urgency here, or exclamation marks, or the word “hidden gem.” You will find, we hope, the thing that is genuinely scarce in travel writing: an opinion worth disagreeing with.

How we make our judgments is documented in How we evaluate. How we make our money is documented just as plainly in our Legal notice: the short version is that commissions never touch the rankings.
