Every ranking, comparison, and recommendation on calanova.co follows the same discipline. This page is the contract behind them.
What we actually assess
We evaluate the thing itself rather than the marketing around it. For a hotel or villa that means the rooms people actually get (not just the suite in the press kit), the location in practice, service consistency, food beyond the flagship restaurant, and whether the price positions it honestly against its true alternatives. The same logic applies to cruises, tours, and products: what you get, what it really costs, and what you give up by choosing it.
We also weigh the qualities that resist photography, such as proportion, quiet, light, and the feel of a place at 7am rather than at golden hour.
Where our information comes from
In order of weight:
- First-hand experience. Stays, sailings, and visits by our editors. When a recommendation rests on first-hand experience, we say so. When it does not, we say that too. We would rather admit the limit than imply a stay that never happened.
- Primary research. Conversations with operators, general managers, travel advisors, and guides; current rate checks for real dates; floor plans, itineraries, and contracts rather than brochures.
- Verified guest experience. Patterns across large volumes of recent guest feedback, weighted for recency and for reviewers who wanted the same thing our readers want. A resort beloved by twenty-somethings on a party week tells a family or a honeymooner very little.
- The competitive set. Nothing is judged in isolation. Every recommendation is a choice against its real alternatives, and we compare like for like: peak-season rates against peak-season rates, equivalent room categories, equivalent itineraries.
Press trips and media rates exist in this industry. Where we accept them, they are disclosed on the relevant page, and they buy no coverage. Hosts are evaluated by the same criteria as everything else, and several have not made our lists.
Why things get excluded
Most of what we research is never published, and the exclusions are deliberate. A property gets left out because it lost to a direct alternative, because its pricing is dishonest to its quality, because service reports are inconsistent, or because it is famous for reasons that stopped being true. Where the exclusion itself is useful to you, we name it and explain it.
Prices
Published prices are real observed prices for stated dates, not teaser rates. They are accurate on the date shown and will drift afterward, so always verify with the provider before deciding. Where a price range is wide, we say what moves it.
Updates
Our key pages carry a visible last-updated date, and it means something: on that date, a person re-checked the recommendations, prices, and rankings. When a ranking changes, we note what changed our mind. A page we can no longer stand behind is revised or removed rather than left to age.
Money, and why it does not touch any of this
Calanova earns commission on some bookings and purchases made through our links, as disclosed in our Legal notice. The wall between that and this page is absolute. No one can pay to be included, commission rates are invisible to the editors doing the ranking, and some of our top picks pay us nothing at all. If following the money and following our advice ever pointed in different directions, our advice would be worthless, and so would the business. We rank as if you will check.
Tools
We use software, including AI tools, for research support, data organization, and production. Judgments, rankings, and final text are made and owned by our editors. Nothing on this site is an unreviewed machine output.
Disagree with us?
Good rankings are falsifiable. If you have stayed somewhere we recommend and it failed you, or if we have excluded something you believe belongs, write to us. Reader reports that check out have changed our rankings before.
